RAW! CRUSH!! FLUSH!!!

Something unpleasant-smell of decompositions gasping towards into our air, LAVATORY is one of those recent death metal bands crawled from Malaysian-devastasting local death-scene with olden sound of Swedish Death Metal. The stench-mix between death metal and punk make it's more ugly and filthy enough! LAVATORY has been strong festering towards the death since their debut release, "Transgression" EP, back in 2012. The bands try to not make it's like other typical - Malaysian death metal back then, when most of them still trap and buried with their old memories from the glorious era. I got the opportunity to talk with the band frontman, MKD and talk something what the band reeked for in this recent years. Enjoy and keep you toilet's remain dirty and stink!

MIKA ROTTEN - First of all, thanks for your times to replying this interview, and welcome to the ugly side of DISCARNAGE. How life goes rotten so far this years?

MKD - We are thrilled to have the opportunity to answer the DISCARNAGE interviews.Life is getting ROT day by days.At this time and now the world is on covid-19 outbreak. Hope that all will end well and the struggle must continue. TO THE DEATH!! 

MIKA ROTTEN - LAVATORY was arise and crawling some years ago. Without any tricky or fvcking trendy step, I guess the band has gotten followed by many Svenska Dodsmetall worshipper around the DM-Underground scene. Firstly, can you dismembered some fairy tales about the creation of LAVATORY for us.

MKD - Good question. At that time we didn't think about trends we were following. We just create our own style of death metal with little bit mix with black metal and punk elements  which is each of us has different kind of interest and music hearing. But what we can share here is we're the only band play different than the other bands we have in Malaysia back then. That's great if we been followed by many (it would be awesome!!) svenska dodsmetall worshipper. Maybe because of the HM-2 pedal we use makes the listener been possessed!! Most our influences back then from U.S and European bands like Asphyx, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Dismember, Entombed, Necrovorous, Crematory etc

MIKA ROTTEN - To get a strongest connections and dwell the “sunlight” together into the ground, and to build a sick formations between a members lineup look not easy after all. We all might know, some of us (especially Malaysian Deadhead) don’t much possessed by the terms of Swedish Death Metal. But we still lucky enough to have a band that pay a homage to this music, band like LAVATORY and DEATHEVOKER already in there. Salute and respect!

MKD - Damn,you're correct man! It's not easy at the first place (until now HA HA!) Actually in my opinion I don't care much about IF deadhead in here doesn't like what LAVATORY try to deliver. It might take some time for them to like it. We can't force them to hear (but we can suggest) The most important thing is our passion and interest in this death metal music, our own style and sound especially. We want to show to the world out there that we also can be the best (at least). Nothing is impossible and no one can stop us!! Hail to DEATHEVOKER and REPUTDEATH!! they're really good mates. SALUTE! 

MIKA ROTTEN - I’m still wonder, if a band like FATALIST didn’t start to re-open back the terms of “Old School Swedish Death Metal” or maybe REPUGNANT with “Retro-Death” style few years ago, maybe some of us still trap and drown into nowhere. It’s good to remembering the past, but life goes rot man! Any unreal motivation or maybe a thing that push you back then to keep this music as the band music direction.

MKD - Both bands are great if we're talk about past. They have their own style and touch. Our motivation was to bring two listeners together between punks and metal.(It would be great to see them on the floor of death sharing the same sweats) We love to see that someday. Our tendency is more towards D-beat/death metal but in here the terms are still slow for the listener to accept. Maybe at that time they were still unfamiliar with it. Give them time to explore and we hope they're more open minded in the future. 

MIKA ROTTEN - I’m still remember when I hold my copy of “Transgression” EP tape back then. I can’t stop myself to say “..this band totally fvcking awesome! and they will kicking all the creepy bastard outhere!”  In general, I could see the path what LAVATORY try to create with this outstanding release.  Did you still remember how was the first session of “Transgression” recording look like? 

MKD - Big cheers for the compliment and highly appreciated! Damn, back to 2011 we really want the difference in sound and music structure. The recording was very exciting and we were very pleased with what we had (not many ppl used to hear). At that time, the death metal/punk spirit in our young soul was so strong to produce something new especially the EP for the first time. Unforgettable! 

MIKA ROTTEN - Slaughterhouse Records was handling the CD version and Morbid Invasion Rex / Vomit Blood & Virgil Studio on cassette format for “Transgression” EP back then. Beside of this label that release your debut records back then, did you have approach any other label? How you see this label carry out this release?

MKD - At first we released the cassette format 'Transgression' back to 2011.MKD part of the partnership between Morbid Invasion Rex and Vigil studio. So you'll know who Vomit Blood is. We do approach and gave some of the established local label to hear at the first place but seems like our style of death metal didn't caught their attention. After that the label called 'Sickchainsaw' from Thailand interested with the EP .Due to some circumstances we never close the deals. (Hope in the future we can work something out again). We get the deals with Slaughterhouse Recs (U.S) after a suggestion from our sweet friend Jill (Razorback Recs)  back then. Without her we don't been recognized and been reviewed on Terrorizer Mags #229 .Slaughterhouse Recs done really great job to spread especially in U.S and worldwide.Jr.Torina and his label started to breathe again after long hiatus. We really appreciated his effort!Since then you can see many great bands like Savage Deity, Nonserviam, Succubus,etc get a good deal from the label who's release our first EP on CD format.

MIKA ROTTEN - Simple question and might be little dragging ya, are you satisfied with the final result on “Transgression” EP? Give me just three words about this release!

MKD - We satisfied and it will be remain dirty as his name. RAW!! CRUSH & FLUSH!! 

MIKA ROTTEN - I guess it’s not to late for me to say, a big congrats to your deal between Pulverised Records and LAVATORY. It’s such a great achievement for the bands, to release a album under this rotten label. How the real stories begun?

MKD - Thanks man! Coincidentally our friend Nicholas (Necrolatry Recs) was in Singapore. Roy from Pulverised Recs asked about LAVATORY and got interested after hearing our song on YouTube and  we were talk via email and get the deal making an album(What  a moment).From there the stories begin.. 

MIKA ROTTEN - 2 years after the birth of “Transgression” EP might be a long gloomy corridor that we need to past by before the band first full-length out. With more mid-paced reeking, slicing throat-punk vocals style, guitar solo that embark the atmosphere from the song, heavy-buzz guitar tones it’s make its more dirty and ugly special on “Morbid Terror” album! I think the time your take and your work to make this album finally been repay in the end. “Morbid Terror” album get very positive response since it’s come out till today.

MKD - What a glorious year we can said during the 'Transgression' time. Great moments and a lot of joys with the old mates. The experience of the 'Morbid Terror'is really adventurous for us. Some more the formation change for LAVATORY during that time. We try something groovy on that album (not much just little bit HA HA!) We feel satisfied with our work and no regret. Yes, the album get very positive response especially outside Malaysia. Even it's not the best for some people but it's still good for some pure death metal worshipper who really know how to appreciate the efforts, ideas, sounds and the music it self. (Salute to you!!) So take your time and don't forget to raise your volume to 666 if you have the album. Cheers! 

MIKA ROTTEN - I guess the formation of the band also got changes after “Morbid Terror” album come out. Any stories about the formation changes?  Can you share to us your current band members, and if you don’t mind maybe a little story about their musical background look like.

MKD - Owh yea, I give you short stories here.. It's because of life, health and financial.Wish all the best to an ex-member who has a happy life. All the wonderful memories together will always be remembered. Without you guys LAVATORY are nothing.

MIKA ROTTEN - We might rotting in the end of this interview, few more question before we’re out. Can we hear something new ( album? ) from the band soon? I guess you’re been working on it’s.

MKD - Owh yea, we plan to release a 2nd album this year after 6 years disappearance (no new material) and now we rise under the label called Legion Music from Malaysia. What we can share this time about this album it is more faster, dirty and melodic. Yep, we're working on it and doing our best for the listeners out there. Wait for it!!!! 

MIKA ROTTEN - LAVATORY among other band that play with INCANTATION during their “Seige of the Profane” Asia tour back in 2018. How do see this big achievement impact on your “resume” in the future? Some memorable moments from the show that you might wanna share to us?

MKD - We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to share the stage with mighty Incantation in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, Thailand. They're really cool guy, humble and friendly musicians. (Respect!) For us, it is all about passion. In return it's going to be worth. Trust me! The moments from the show when we come down from the stage straightaway they said our music sound like GATECREEPER.(cheers for that) We also sharing the same tour bus,having a food and beer at the back stage,The sleepiness moment while heading back to the airport.(Damn!! We need to awake at 5am!!) and also for sure we're grab a chance for the signature on T-shirt, poster and CDs. We're the fan boys remember! HA HA! Lot of fun! 

MIKA ROTTEN - Currently, we’re hardly hit by the outbreaking of pandemic disease. It’s leave a fear to society all over the world. Without exception, in underground scenes too. Some tour and show has call up for postponed and cancellation. LAVATORY should be there, to opening for NUNSLAUGHTER show in Kuala Lumpur, but the show also got cancel due to the critical situation. How do see the impact of the disease give to all underground metal bands out there ? You might know, there a band that make living with music. 

MKD - This pandemic disease make a big impact on everyone not even us. Yea, the show need to be canceled for safety and health reasons. We think that's the best way for NUNSLAGHTER, organizer and all the involved bands. It's really sad all these thing happen especially for the full time musicians, artist ,bands and more. Many gigs, concert and festival canceled due the pandemic outbreak. Worst year for everyone. Within this few months many underground metal bands struggling to do whatever the can because there is no platform (at this crisis time) to show their passion and love in metal music.We hope all these shit gone in real soon.A lot of planning become limited because of this. Last word from us.. Fuck corona! 

MIKA ROTTEN - If you need to recommend to our readers or might your friends, what Malaysian local band they should check? By the way, your latest death metal demo playlist on your analog player? I know you’re demo-digger too. Ha!

MKD - Damn,check this old school black/death called TOMB. If you're into early 90's stuff.. It's worth to keep for your library of death!!Highly recommend! Currently, I listened to ULCEROT(Denmark),CORPSED (US) and BURIAL (Italy) Deaathhhhhh Metaaaaallll!!!

MIKA ROTTEN - Thanks for your times mates! Recently we' all facing difficult situation due to the outbreaking of pandemic disease, hope you doing good right there. By the way, how are you?

A. DEZTRUXTOR - Hellcome brother!! And greeting to all the readers.. i am Deztruxtor and Im doing fine but need to work as usual since im working in F&B industries.. urrgghhhh!! Due to the pandemic disease spread instantly the goverment have made the movement control order so we need to stay the fuck home and listen to record i guess and start record new song. I hope this issue will be going well soon.

MIKA ROTTEN - First of all, we've all know you have been there with Disobeyed. When the idea started to form GRAVEHAMMER.

A. DEZTRUXTOR - From the beginning since i am into the metal underground scene im really into this kind of OSDM genre. When im form DISOBEYED back in 2011 its between me and my brother Xahguld , we mix together Death metal and Black metal and there it goes.. yet we are currently still on progress recording for DISOBEYED new album coming soon under Evildead production. The idea Of GRAVEHAMMER came from my own self. Just need the most exact time for me to start the band. It takes several years . This idea started to be a 1 man band since i cant find any nearest comrade/lineup that really into this filthy musick . Finally i found Shyxxxul to join this band since he not in any other band. So we agreed to be the DUO CHAINSAW MASSACRE!!! At the moment we do not play in any LIVE show as what our main focus to record song and release. Then we try to find any label that will be interested. Depends on the situation maybe we will be playing LIVE show soon after we can get any lineup or session in the future.

MIKA ROTTEN - Congrats on the reborn (in blasphemy) of your Promo 2020! Can you tell us more about this two-track promo?

A. DEZTRUXTOR - Thanks by the way. Yes this two- track promo song that i put into this promo 2020 is to promote and as the introduction to our local scene. There is 4 track all together but i choose this two song as the gatecreeper for the beginning of this funeral.. At the first i only wanted to shared to all friends this two- track through the WhatsApp mobile application. But when im think twice this thing should be in physically material but in DIY way.. so i burn into CDR and print the cover with old skool punk method copy and paste. Total fucking underground way!!!

MIKA ROTTEN - "Promo 2020" by GRAVEHAMMER has all feel of classic Swedish Death Metal style, from lo-fi raw production, crushing "buzzsaw" riffs to obscure vocal style. How is the whole process going when you start recording this promo? Besides Swe-death influences, are there any other musical influences that give a (death)breath to GRAVEHAMMER music?

A. DEZTRUXTOR - We worship Swe-Death metal and we worship BOSS HM-2!!! I start record this two-track promo song since im started to learning recording process and program at my ancient cave Homestudio in my house. I record all the instrument by my own after i slept in the coffin for a day. Hahaha. Dismember , Entombed , Nirvana 2002 , Grotesque , repugnant , Necrocurse , Nifelheim , massacre , Deathevoker , Bastard Priest , Bastard Grave ,scalpture , Sadistic intent etc . This all band that i listen and many more to mention. Besides swe-death metal we are also influences by some old punk band like discharge,anti cimex.

MIKA ROTTEN - I really dig all kind of promo, demo, rehearsal stuff with lo-fi cave production. Listen to how "Behind the tomb" and "Miasmal of the dead" burst from my speaker, it's give me a signs that I shall listen to it's over and over again and with your promo it's proved that Death Metal should be play in more dirty and raw ways! How the process going behind the mixing and mastering process.
A. DEZTRUXTOR - As i mentioned this question above i record all the instrument all by my own self.. mixing and mastering all together at my homestudio called ZYKLON STUDIO base in Tawau sabah

MIKA ROTTEN - There always a connection between death, horror or gore theme and Death Metal music basically. How your lyrics approach into your music that you've create? Did you need something to inspire you when writing a lyrics?

A. DEZTRUXTOR - I wrote the lyric for miasma of the dead and its inspired from something that comes through my mind when im trying to find an idea by following the concept of GRAVEHAMMER . Behind the Tomb wrote by Mr.Chan sek weng and many songs to come will be write all by him. He agree to give 100% gravesupport to help me out with the lyrics. So i guess i can get less pressure and focus on composing Song & Riff.

MIKA ROTTEN - As a band that pay homage to Swedish Death Metal era, what you try looking for in your music?

A. DEZTRUXTOR - We try to make something different from the other band. I am really into something Necro oldskool death metal with obscure and burial enviroment. Grave digging and horrific , cult . satanism & ungodly supremacy.

MIKA ROTTEN - How has the response that you receive for your debut promo so far? How many copy this promo spread into our local-death?

A. DEZTRUXTOR - Of course i really amaze with the feedback from local scene maniac also from peninsula maniac . I never thought that this promo will have a big demand like this since first of all i just release by only 30 copies and need to repress another copy again. I have release this promo 150 copies to all over malaysia and this promo considered SOLDOUT. Btw thanks for the suppport.

MIKA ROTTEN - We guess the future for GRAVEHAMMER looks brights ya? what can we expect soon from the band?

A. DEZTRUXTOR - Currently we continue recording for New Ep that will be unleash under NECROLATRY RECORDS local label soon. We still didnt decide how many song will be in this Ep but we promise to give our best!!

MIKA ROTTEN - Any recommendation from your local death metal bands that you might need to tell to our readers and your thought about Malaysia undergound scene especially in Death Metal music.

In the.. Gardens of Grief | Interview with Baron Huge / WOLF SERMON

I'm not typical “melodic” DEATH METAL  fans, but what WOLF SERMON already done and festering for on their first debut demo totally caught my attention. I'm sure all of you totally dig up the first-two records by AT THE GATES, the grimly-dark melody atmosphere from UNANIMATED or the harmony-maiden guitar styles by DISMEMBER on the last few albums but this is not a comparison about them. WOLF SERMON have something more fresh to be listening and the aggression that the band put on their first demo bring a new landscapes to me how Death Metal can be played in more dark, with more doom laden paced and melodic but total death and filthy enough! I've conducted a little interview with Baron Huge (Bass / Vocal) from this Edinburgh dark-melodic Death/Doom acts, WOLF SERMON and this is the lay out for violent dark arts!

MIKA ROTTEN - Welcome to DISCARNAGE! It's really good to have you in here Baron and thanks for spare some time with us. How your life goes rotten this recently day? It's would be nice, if you could share to us what kind of life did you head on besides worshipping Death Metal music.

BARON HUGE - Thanks for having us here Mika and hails to the readers. I’m having a good day, even though it’s the last day of my holidays. I have spent the morning walking the dog in the woods (and rain) and am now listening to some records whilst drinking coffee. All members of Wolf Sermon have normal everyday jobs. I myself am a teacher.

MIKA ROTTEN - By the way, any interesting new Death Metal releases recently spin off on your player records?

BARON HUGE - Actually currently on my turntable is Harmony Corruption by Napalm Death, the one with the live record from 1990, so not exactly that recent haha. However we have enjoyed new releases by UK bands Eriskegal, Blasphemer and Memoriam, the new albums by Cemetery Urn, Cut Up, Entrails and the Lie In Eternal Rot demo from Skulls.

MIKA ROTTEN - Without waste the times, and to not exhausted to death, I must say thanks to you for hit me up and introduce the creation of WOLF SERMON to me. Better late than fvcking never I guess,  I'm not typical “melodic” DEATH METAL  fans, but  what WOLF SERMON already done and delivered for totally caught my attention. Please share to us how the tales goes to end complete to create the bands and how all of you meet up.

BARON HUGE - No problem dude, thanks for the kind words. I loved the fanzine the minute I saw it and appreciate the time and effort it must take you to do it. Like the Obituary reference too, I believe that is Amarog’s favourite Obituary album. Myself and Amarog (guitars) have actually known each other from school as we’re from the same area. We had been going to gigs together for years 

and had done some bedroom riffing and writing but nothing ever became of it. He and another guitarist (Raf) started writing together around 2012. Greg was asked to drum as he knew Raf through work and Amarog asked me in on bass. I ended up on vocals because no one else would do it. Raf soon left and we continued as a 3 piece for a while, writing riffs while trying to find another guitarist. As Amarog wrote, (and writes), all the music for two guitars we knew we always needed another. Jack joined in 2013, he was actually singing in Greg’s hard rock band Sanity Ward but turns out he’s a bitchin’ guitarist too and preferred that to singing anyway.  Wolf Sermon are therefore exactly 50% Scottish and 50% Polish, by birth anyway. 

MIKA ROTTEN - I got a chances to listen to you first demo that unleash in 2016. Really loved the melo-death structure and sometime the harmony-guitars styles blew my head to the wall. Could you tell us more, how the recording process atmosphere in the studio that time?  And I must give the rotten-credits  to the man on the studio that nailed out you real sound!

BARON HUGE - Twin guitars are a big thing for me as I’m a massive fan of classic metal Maiden, Priest, Mercyful Fate etc and I’m glad you picked up on that. Amarog and Jack work very well together and that was always important to the band. The demo was recorded live and took one day with only the guitar solos being overdubbed at a later point. Being in the studio was a great experience for us as a band as it is actually part of our metal community led practice room here in Edinburgh. We literally had to cross the corridor to get to the recording studio. We had access to some great gear for recording and yes, Stu did a great job. We did it quickly but that was intentional. Mixing and mastering didn’t take too long but again it suited us, the control booth being next to our practice room. It was hard work and intense but clearly beneficial and we can’t wait to do it again.

MIKA ROTTEN - “Pagan Skin” just show how heavy the band tortured  and swirling the melody on the song. Love the fast-slow tempo and your vocal style.  Can you tell our readers, how the stories go in the studio to records this song and did you remember how many minute (maybe hours) did you spend only to records this song?   

BARON HUGE - Pagan Skin was recorded first deliberately. It is the longest and has the most parts and we wanted to get the best take possible of what we knew would be an essential song. We knew the song very well as it was an older song we were used to so it was done fairly quickly but I don’t recall how long. I actually got some of the words wrong on the recording as I’d been singing it differently live but we kept it in anyway. It’s only me that knows anyway haha! Jack did a good job on the backing vocal on the slow part I think. He brought a concoction of thick fruit juice, sugary cereal and Polish beer to help us with our vocals!

MIKA ROTTEN - Generally, when talk about influence that embalmed and decaying into your sound, I quickly can spotted some flavor from At The Gates – the thick layer /monstrous voice , UNANIMATED  -  doomy,dark-grimly melody and DISMEMBER – song compartment and melody-structure. How you described your sounds?
BARON HUGE - Yes, you are indeed on the right lines and clearly have excellent ears. I am a big fan of Tompa’s vocals, both in At the Gates and in his other projects such as Lock Up. David Vincent on the early Morbid Angel releases was also an influence, particularly Altars which is my favourite DM album ever. Necrophobic, Evocation and Gates of Ishtar were some of the primary influences for Wolf Sermon from the beginning. Dismember of course too. But influence doesn’t really come out until a song is at least 2 or 3 riffs in. It is almost like what needs to come out Amarog’s guitar comes out first, then influence creeps in. Song structure is incredibly important as we are interested in writing songs and not just a collection of meaty riffs. We try not to define or describe our sounds and leave that up to others.

MIKA ROTTEN - I know build and create a melody for a song sometimes look easy but it truly is terrible-hard enough! How the process goes for the WOLF SERMON?
BARON HUGE - It is fairly straightforward for us but does take a long time. Amarog writes all the music for Wolf Sermon and is very particular, has a close attention to detail and changes things all the time. But he writes riffs every day and works on 2-3 songs at a time. It takes a while for a song to become fully finished, but that to me is preferable to writing something sub-standard or something that you are unhappy with. 

MIKA ROTTEN - Horror topic/subjects and Death Metal music can’t be separated, and it’s also the best ingredients to make this music quite interesting. Maybe some of us think it’s totally expired or even bored to fvck! WOLF SERMON already proved and show how to blend and mix this thing’s perfectly. Generally, did you think we need something “fresh” in Death Metal music?
BARON HUGE - Yeah it’s not called Life Metal for a reason. Like Ozzy said, singing love songs over dark and heavy music would sound pretty stupid, but that’s not to say that it can’t be done, In My Darkest Hour springs to mind. But horror/gore etc will always have a place in death metal, it just fits. Autopsy are still releasing killer albums and I’m looking forward to the new Exhumed record too, but for Wolf Sermon I wasn’t interested in writing these kinds of lyrics only. Our lyrics and themes deal with dark subject matter but tell stories within grander concepts based on interests I have and what fits the song. I think death metal is always developing, look at the influence a bands like Portal have had in the last decade or so. Death metal always delivers whether you prefer old style or newer.

MIKA ROTTEN - And… can we see the “final hell-await” for WOLF SERMON debut full length album unleash through this years or maybe around next years? Did the band already work for that?
BARON HUGE - Yes. A debut album is being written as we speak and that is what we are concentrating on. We have just completed a new song that has some pretty tasty death metal riffs I think you’ll like. The album will be ready sometime next year.

MIKA ROTTEN - I guess WOLF SERMON debut demo already crushing and spread over into the burial ground around this rotting globe. How Metalhead’s  and zine’s editor reacted about your first demo’s ? If I give you a chance to going back when you recorded this demo, did you want changed up something from this demo?
BARON HUGE - We were just talking about this the other day and yes, we would have liked to have recorded more guitars, filler riffs etc and maybe spent more time on the vocals. But I believe it a recording is of a band at that particular point in time. It was important to us to get those songs down quickly, released at least digitally and not waste too much time on the details. Three of the songs were quite old, whereas the other was newer. Never Hunt Alone was almost brand new in fact. The reaction we have received over the demo has been nothing but positive and we are very pleased with reviews and opinions from metalheads worldwide on it so far.

MIKA ROTTEN - We’re going to final doom! Some more question before I wrath up this “Death Mental Illness” interview. Any date to be announced about your upcoming gig/show or maybe festival that the bands will festering and rotting decaying on the stage?
BARON HUGE - We have absolutely nothing booked for the immediate future regarding gigs but we hope to remedy this soon. We are concentrating on the creation of new material and not so much the live stuff but we would really like to get out and play live more once our new material is finished.

MIKA ROTTEN - What should Death Metal maniac’s and DISCARNAGE’s ugly reader can expect from WOLF SERMON? Since there are so many good DEATH METAL bands out there nowadays!
BARON HUGE - You’re right there, there are many good band out there right now, in all areas of metal I think. It’s impossible to keep up with but it is always exciting. What I can promise the listener with Wolf Sermon is heavy

riffs, screaming vocals, dark subject matter and doom laden death metal to the bone.

It's really good to dig a new 'visceral to the gore' old school Death Metal which represents this stinky and filthy old sound. The worthy successor for those dig all the feeling and atmosphere from the early 90's death metal landscape. To unleash the zombie, I managed to talk with Hugo Andremon, the former guitar of several Underground-Metal acts such as Grog, Simbiose, Filii Nigrantium Infernalium, The Sorcerer and Hellfuck, beyond the creation of INNARDS. MIKA ROTTEN - “Olá, Demónio da Morte!”  It's really great to have you on this ugly web-site Hugo and sharing some macabre tales about the creation of INNARDS to us. With a pleasure of times, I give you a big space in here to introduce how INNARDS started back then and beside you who the 'ugly-person' that involved on this project too. 

HUGO ANDREMON - Innards was the best name we could come up with, which directly represents our musical approach. Something visceral! The band was formed by me, it took me 3 years to gather the right people for this project, as I played in many bands before (Grog, The Sorcerer, FIlii Nigrantium Infernalium, SImbiose, Hellfuck) and the majority of musicians in my area already had played with me before, so I was searching for new blood, to start a new thing. I knew our Bass Player for some years ago, he was playing in a Death/Grind act called Necrose and organizing a Death/Grind festival in his city called, Butchery At X-mas Time, where I played before with Grog. We talked about some new projects and the idea of making new music and he joined the band in February. Also found a drummer that time, but things didn’t work out after 4 months of rehearsals.

MIKA ROTTEN - By the way, did you know.. There are already a band that use "INNARDS" as a band names before? What's INNARDS meaning to yours?

HUGO ANDREMON - Yes we now that, but they are not active anymore and they do not make the same music as we do, so there are no chances of mistakes between bands 😊 Innards is something you feel in your guts, its Visceral, it’s part of you!

MIKA ROTTEN - Firstly, how the studio progress for the first stuff from INNARDS right now? I saw a news on your FB pages, that the band are searching for a new guitarist, did you already found the right man to handle all the putrid and stench flavor?

HUGO ANDREMON - Well, as I said before, we had some issues with our first drummer, but we managed to work with Rolando Barros, (drummer from Grog, that worked with me in The Sorcerer and Filii Nograntium Infernalium too) that helped us out and recorded the drum tracks for us. So, everything ended out pretty good! About the 2nd guitar, we didn’t found nobody yet, but I’m sure that when the demo will come out, we will get some contacts.

MIKA ROTTEN - Someone who loved the putrid and disgusting tunes of Old School Death definitely will loved what INNARDS try delivered. Tells us more about the upcoming promo that the bands work for and how many song you'll put on that release. 

HUGO ANDREMON - Our debut will be a 3 song promo or demo- Tape. About 16 minutes of pure oldschool Death Metal in the old vein of Death, Morgoth, Pestilence, Cancer, Massacre, etc It will be 16 minutes no-stop with intro, songs and outro. You will wanna listen to it in loop, over and over and over again!! If you’re really old school, prepare a Bic pen to rewind the tape several times

MIKA ROTTEN - I've listening some rehearsal tracks that you upload on your pages, it's totally mind blowing. Stench of heavy tunes and been fill up with a strongest song decomposition. Speaking beyond the bands inspiration, can you named a band that give the band the ugly-lights to embrace your Old School Death sound creations.

HUGO ANDREMON - Can’t just name one, but probably first 3 Death albums, 1st Deicide album, some oldschool thrash like Kreator’s Pleasure To Kill, I don't know I have several different influences, but mainly European 80’s thrash and late 80’s early 90’s Florida death metal.

MIKA ROTTEN - How the idea came, when creating a riff's for a song? 

HUGO ANDREMON - I can’t tell ya that for sure, bro! It depends, but it has to be oldschool and meaningful to me to be a good riff. Must tell a story, or provide an ambience, express a sensation, or a feeling...

MIKA ROTTEN - Lyrical approach and song de-composition are the big part that will dwell on the band's character. How you combine this part's and which one did you think are the mostly important for a band to push for.

HUGO ANDREMON - I think both are important, one complements the other. The issue is to know how to balance the instrumental and the vocals and what you wanna say and what you wanna express just in the music.

MIKA ROTTEN - Who's take in charge for the lyrical parts?

HUGO ANDREMON - To be honest, I’m taking charge of everything... Instrumental, production, writing and recording the instruments, even writing the drum- parts, with the technical support of Jorge Fernandes from SounScapes Studios where we are recording.

MIKA ROTTEN - I guess the band pretty much obsessed in terms of gore and horror subject regarding to the arts that I look in your pages. Gore, horror or death subject maybe the most easy subject or topic for us to wrote and take a inspirations. Generally, it's not a bored subject for you to dwell within? 

HUGO ANDREMON - Not boring, not at all! I’m always inspired to talk about the dead and the evil that grows inside a Man’s heart and soul. Also a passionate for Horror movies and Themes, so I’m playing home.

MIKA ROTTEN - Did you have any favourites horror-gore films? 

HUGO ANDREMON - Sure I had, and still have! Pet Cemetery, Evil Dead, Fright Night, Night Of The Living Dead, Demons, Night Of The Demon, In The Mouth Of Madness, John Carpenter, Stephen King, Hellraisers, Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, etc 

MIKA ROTTEN - Your band logo look 'gore' enough to me! It's look like human rotten-bowel, terrifying and bloody-disgusting! Who did the logo and the arts for your upcoming release?

HUGO ANDREMON - Yes it is a nice Bowel Work! It was made by our friend Johan Anthonissen, from the old band Suhrim, and now singer of Marginal (Crust/Death Band from Belgium). The dude is a sick artist \m/ did the Logo and the Tape Cover Art!

MIKA ROTTEN - Regarding to your upcoming stuff that will cherish us in the future, did you already have a plan what format did you will release it's and any label records already approach you for that release?

HUGO ANDREMON - Yes we already can advance that the first 100 copies will be released in Tape. Full coloured Promo-Tape, with 3 killer songs, 16 minutes of pure Death Metal full of Maggots! Contract is still being written so, we can only advance that will be an American label.

MIKA ROTTEN - Releasing a stuff, doing some tour are the best moment you'll get playing in a band. What the next step all of us will see after your stuff will be unleash in the future?

HUGO ANDREMON - Its all that you said, my friend! We hope this will be the beginning of lots of shows and more releases, specially Long Plays!

Beyond the creation of... Subconscious Lobotomy | Interview with Nikos / GRAVEWARDS

Rotting away from Athens, Greece...

The macabre tales of GRAVEWARDS started back in 2015 when the choir of death has singing down by the death-ripper, and there was Nikos (Vocal / Guitar), Fotis (Bass) and Vasilis (Drum) hold tight their passion and aiming to delivered their own style of DEATH METAL towards the altar of madness! I got a chances to speak with Niko, and ask him about the creation of "Subconscious Lobotomy"! The macabre tales never tell us the lies...

MIKA ROTTEN - Hi Nikos ! Glad to have you in here, and I total welcome you into the ugly side of DISCARNAGE! First of all, let’s take a deep breath before we’re going rot into the grave. Any latest Death Metal demo/album that recently spin off on your player record today?
NIKOS - Hey mate, great to talk with you once more and thank you on behalf of the band for featuring GRAVEWARDS in the grotesque world of Discarnage…the cut n paste feeling of the virtual world…Well I always have records/tapes or cds waiting for me to find the time to listen to ..i see among others the memoriam releases and the re release on vinyl of the ‘’Engraved in black’’ by Acrostichon..

MIKA ROTTEN - It’s really good to know the existence of GRAVEWARDS, and it’s really honor for me to do this interview also. How the macabre tales of GRAVEWARDS started? Did you, Fotis and Vasilis came from other bands before? Here you chances to describe how Fotis and Vasilis look like in GRAVEWARDS…. It’s easy working with them in this deadly Death Metal trio formation?
NIKOS - We are friends for many many years…all involved into bands and stuff through the years…tape trading days and shit as well. Here has been always this perfect alchemy between us whenever we did a rehearsal together…so forming a band was just a matter of time actually…it took us more years than planned…but better late than never. We do not rush things up…we work together for the pleasure of it…to please our inmost need to create something from scratch taking the form that expresses us the most…We are an underground band respecting itself ..nothing more…we are not here to pay tribute to anyone..we just follow our path and that’s it…simple things.

MIKA ROTTEN - I’m really dig your “Subconscious Lobotomy” Demo! It’s like a new vision on my side when Death Metal was approach in technical, and some groove-thrashy ways. You know, I’m not a fans for some “modern” Tech-Death Metal generally but for “Subconscious Lobotomy” demo I was considered I’m totally fvcking twisted into your sound. It’s not complicated song writing, and I’m guess GRAVEWARDS are very strong in terms of song decompositions. You know, some people have their own opinion about certain music and let me hear from your side about GRAVEWARDS real music directions.
NIKOS - We love death metal and thrash metal as well…and we are in the middle of these two genres..there is nothing modern or groundbreaking into it…just personal views and ideas transformed into brutal music…we are not the fastest..we do not care to become an over technical band..we do what we do…always taking a step forward towards what evolution is to us and only…

MIKA ROTTEN - I’m also spotted your music was trapped in Death/Thrash coffins. “The choir of undead” can’t  go outside the coffins and I think it’s a best answer for all Death Metal-underground maniac out there to check your demo. Any idea to crossing or maybe a little mixed with other genre that you loved to play beside Death Metal?

NIKOS - Well, obviously Old Thrash records..but bands such as Amebix , Doom , Discharge, Axegrinder, Prophecy of doom, Hellbastard for example always find their way to my turntable..but not influencing our music that much…there is this huge void between listening and performing..not always go hand in hand…

MIKA ROTTEN - I need my glasses when I hold your cover tape to read your lyrics, it’s make my eye will pop out from my head because reads yours lyrics through that small fonts on that sleeve. Ha! If there any problem about your release I need to complaint, it’s definitely goes to that! Ha! Speak about your lyrical themes, I guess GRAVEWARDS much dwell into horror, and death topic and how about the real things that happen around you? I thought it’s a minor influence for a band to dwell this kind of things.
NIKOS - Yes but always available upon request!!! hahaha… Anyway, well everything fictional or not always filtered from a personal point of view…Life provides unlimited source when it comes to the lyrical aspect that’ s for sure…But the Horror, Macabre atmosphere is always present in our lyrics..i prefer this little mystical touch into it..rather than saying fuck you a trillion times.

MIKA ROTTEN - Horror films and Death Metal music can’t be separated, and it’s also the best ingredient to make this music quite interesting. Maybe some of us think it’s totally expired or even bored. Generally, did you think we need something fresh and “Untouchable” theme/topic in Death Metal music?  And are you one of horror films maniac?

NIKOS - I am a HUGE horror fan covering all of it’s aspects…not only films and stuff…To be honest is a great source..we just can’t deny it..overused I agree but it will still influence this kind of music no matter what…Death metal can’t cover all the possible topics in life…it must keep this hostile , taking no shit thing into it…otherwise it will become just the ‘’soundtrack’’ of everyones life… The mighty Chuck had a personal way to express his emotions…and this individual approach maybe is what the ‘’scene’’ needs the most.

MIKA ROTTEN - The final result from “Subconscious Lobotomy” Demo totally blew me up from the sound that you captured in Made In Hell Studio. It’s not a sound like a demo for me! It’s very advanced from the sound producing quality and I must say a big rotting credits to that studio to help GRAVEWARDS delivered their real music! How the process of recording goes in this studio and how long did you all take to finish it’s? And can you give us a “little tour” inside the studio what kind of this studio look like.. 
NIKOS - Yes we are pleased when it comes to the final result…in fact we are working on our album in the same studio…The quality of our recordings is very important to us…we respect our art and we want to immortalize it in the best possible way… A demo does not necessarily means a bad recording..as it used to in the old days… We recorded the demo sporadically starting October till November 2016. Well working together with David is a pleasure for us…he tolerates us and that’s great…he can easily understand our needs ..what more should we look for?

MIKA ROTTEN - Tell us more how GRAVEWARDS end up with NECRONOME PRODUCTION, and I can see from the inlay inside the tape, the “Subconscious Lobotomy” Demo are the first release by this label.

NIKOS - Simple things…a friend having a mailorder that loves our sound..we ended up taking 200 units in the end and during thins month the tape will be sold out.

MIKA ROTTEN - Nowadays, we can look many underground-bands released a digital stuff like rehearsal/promo/demo/Ep/Album/Single using a bandcamp and later on sent the full links to some webzine for a review or promotions, I’m not against this new way and I guess it’s the perfect places to spread fast your latest stuff and to tell the outside about the existence of your bands. And, it’s really nice for me to hold your “real” release. Thanks for that! Lets hear from your side about this issue, and did you think all the memories from receiving a letter, catalog, demo, trades are going to dead in the future? 

NIKOS - I am into tape trading and underground ways of correspondence for way too many years..before this internet chained world become a reality…things changed but the core remained through the years…I strongly believe we should enjoy the music not trying to find the lost time capsule holding the great memories we all have from old days and stuff like that…life is changing..everything is changing in the end… But the most important thing we should respect is that metal without the physical format of it…is NOTHING. 

MIKA ROTTEN - Did you still collect or buy any records that out from the underground scene? What about the real fanzine? We’re know that Athens are very modern city, it’s easy to find any record stores in your places? Any suggestions…

NIKOS - I love the printed zines and always did…damn it is so great to be able to read zines such as Forgotten Chapel, By this axe I rule, Temple of Adoration , Soulgrinder ,Cultmongers ,Reborn from Ashes , Crush the Cross , From Beyond , Tribal Convictions ,Akkeldama ,Witchcraft and so many others still going on… Indeed here in Athens finding metal to buy is the easiest thing in the world…nothing like how it used to be…shops . labels or whatever pop up all the time.

MIKA ROTTEN - Let’s get back to our main topic, I recently read many good review about “Subconscious Lobotomy” Demo, did your imagine you will received a lots of good response from the underground scenes? It’s a big step and challenge for your next release to handling it’s.

NIKOS - No we never thought about it…indeed the reactions and the interest is great. People wanting to have our release physically is a pleasure… We are working hard on our full album…it will be faster and in your face like a punch.

MIKA ROTTEN - In other parts, “Subconscious Lobotomy” Demo reminds me a lot to John Tardy from Obituary in terms of how you tortured your throat. Loved that monster-voice! Ha!

NIKOS - Ha!! Thank you…I love his sick vocal approach since day one..

MIKA ROTTEN - We’re going to end up this interview, some more question before we rot! Did you already record some advanced track for yours upcoming release?

NIKOS - The recording process begun already… we will take the necessary time to complete the songs..i always have songs ready to be used in future releases anyway…

MIKA ROTTEN - How about playing a live show? 

NIKOS - For the time being we prefer timeless rehearsals.
